Floyd County reports death from H1N1 flu virus
Breaking News      DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting two more H1N1 flu-related deaths, including one here in north-central Iowa.
According to the health department, both victims, an adult in Floyd County and an adult in Johnson County, had risk factors that increased the chance of complications from the H1N1 virus.
The two deaths brings to 21 the number of Iowans who have died after contracting the virus. More than 600 people have been hospitalized with influenza-like illness since September 1, 2009.
The health department on Wednesday gave a breakdown of the people who have contracted the H1N1 virus. Officials say deaths mirror the state's population, with all age groups, and racial and ethnic groups affected.
Among those hospitalized, the most common underlying medical conditions were immune-compromised conditions, such as cancer, respiratory ailments and neuromuscular conditions. More than half those hospitalized were overweight or obese.

BREAKING --- Mercy announces $17 million project to replace Emergency Department
Breaking News
MASON CITY --- Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa today announced they’ll be doing a complete renovation of their Emergency Department as part of a $17 (M) million replacement project. Mercy president and CEO Jim FitzPatrick says the current Emergency Department doesn’t have the right physical plant to providing care efficiently and in a private manner for patients.  Interim Director of the Emergency Department and Air Life Patti Peterson says the department currently is very inefficient. She says it’s very inconvenient for patients since there are times they have to move long distances from one place to another to receive care, and patients currently don’t have the level of privacy they deserve. Peterson says once the project is completed, emergency room patients will notice a big difference. Peterson says patients who need X-rays or other scans won’t need to go far in the new department. She says they will be bringing Radiology into the Emergency Department so patients don’t have to be taken to the current Radiology department for necessary tests. The proposed 25-thousand-500 square foot Emergency Department will be located in the vicinity of the current one and has an estimated completion date of 2011.
