Mercy officials say man involved in chemical incident at West Campus dead
2:27 PM, January 15th, 2010 by Bob Fisher, News Director
MASON CITY --- One person is dead after a chemical spill last night on the West Campus of Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. A news release from Mercy says that a sodium hydroxide spill happened in the hospital’s “Textile Service Department”. During the situation, one of Mercy’s associates had a medical emergency. The Mason City Fire Department and Ambulance Service was call and unable to revive David Weaver, who has worked with Mercy for 15 years. Four firefighters and four other Mercy associates involved in the incident were also evaluated and later released. Mason City Fire Chief Bob Platts says they assisted hospital officials in containing the leak to the Textile Services area. He says once the fire department arrived, they realized that chemicals had been released in an area where they are used…that area was cordoned off until a private company came in to clean up the product. Platts says the chemical spill was well contained and has already been cleaned up. He says it was mostly contained to one room, and none of it got out into the environment. Hospital officials say the investigation into the incident continues.

Culver delivers "Condition of State" speech, asks legislators to provide schools
by O.Kay Henderon, Radio Iowa
DES MOINES --- Governor Chet Culver is calling on legislators to send more state aid to Iowa’s K-through-12 public schools. The opening paragraph in the “Condition of the State” speech Culver delivered at the statehouse this morning uses the word “extraordinary” to describe the challenges facing state lawmakers this year.
“There’s much to do, and no time to waste,” according to the governor.
Twice in the speech Culver calls on legislators to help ensure the 21st century will be “Iowa’s Century.” And Culver offers a defense of the way he and his fellow Democrats in the legislature have handled the state’s finances.
On education, Culver asks that legislators send K-through-12 public schools in Iowa $100 million to make up for some of the across-the-board cut he ordered in October, plus Culver says legislators should keep the commitment they made and provide a two percent increase in general state aid to schools for the academic year that begins this fall.
