JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission has approved an application for a casino license in Lyon County in northwest Iowa but rejected requests from three others. The commission on Thursday unanimously approved the Lyon County casino, noting it wouldn't cut into the business of Iowa's 17 other state-licensed casinos and would draw gamblers from nearby Sioux Falls, S.D. The panel unanimously turned down requests from groups in Fort Dodge, Ottumwa and Tama County. Commissioner Paul Hayes says he support the Lyon County casino because it's expected to draw 80 percent of its revenue from out-of-state gamblers. Estimates were that the other three would get less than 10 percent of their revenue from outside Iowa.

MASON CITY --- The manager of the North Iowa Fair has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into financial irregularities and misuse of fair money. Fair Board president Dennis Higgins confirms to KGLO News that Wanda Kruse has been placed on leave due to the investigation into some financial transactions as well as concerns about her “unprofessional actions”. Higgins says the Mason City Police Department has started an investigation into the financial status of the Fair Association, but no charges have been filed. According to a memo, Higgins requested that Kruse turn over her keys and any computer passwords and leave the fairgrounds office on Tuesday afternoon. The memo also states that Kruse and her family members are not to be on the fairgrounds property until further notice or be subject to criminal trespassing charges. Higgins says a forensic audit will take place, and access to fair bank accounts have been restricted with holds placed on any checks that are presented until they can be reviewed. More details about the investigation will be explained at a regularly-scheduled meeting of the Fair Board tonight.
