Autopsy shows Cole died of drowning
MASON CITY --- The autopsy results of a man found in a Mason City lake shows he died of freshwater drowning. Cerro Gordo County Medical Examiner Steven Goetz performed the autopsy earlier today and says 71-year-old Eugene Cole died of drowning, as there were no signs of natural causes like a heart attack or a stroke. Divers found Cole’s body yesterday afternoon in about 20 feet of water in the south end of Briarstone Lake after not returning from fishing Saturday night. Cole’s wife reported him missing on Sunday evening after his boat was found empty on the lake.

MASON CITY --- Family members confirm to KGLO News that a body pulled from Briarstone Lake in Mason City earlier this afternoon is that of a missing man. Underwater search and rescue teams located a body at around 1 o’clock this afternoon that was later identified as 75-year-old Eugene Cole. Cole had been missing since 10:30 Saturday night after he failed to return from fishing outside of his family’s home on Briarstone Lake. Cole’s wife Mary Pat reported him missing at 7 o’clock on Sunday evening after his boat was found empty on the lake. Four different teams from Cerro Gordo, Carroll, Sioux and Winona counties all volunteered to search the lake earlier today.
