Latham reacts to Obama speech on oil spill
Breaking News WASHINGTON --- North-central Iowa Congressman Tom Latham says the federal government’s response to the Gulf Oil spill has been poor and it’s time for President Obama to step up efforts. He says Obama talking about going forward all sounds good, but the concern is being two months into the disaster and what hasn’t been done and the denial of help from outside sources. Latham says Obama seemed to use his Oval Office speech on Tuesday night as more of an opportunity to push his agenda than to address fixing the spill. He says Obama spent about a third of the speech about new opportunities for more government control and higher taxes instead of spending it on solving the problem. An Associated Press poll indicates that 52-percent of Americans disapprove of Obama’s handling of the oil spill crisis. That disapproval rating is about the same as President George W. Bush had after Hurricane Katrina. Obama’s overall approval rating is stable at about 50-percent.

Latham was on the KGLO "Midday Report" with News Director Bob Fisher. A copy of the interview can be found this afternoon on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/kglonews

High speed pursuit in CL --- US 218 tanker truck incident
Breaking News
CLEAR LAKE --- Two people have been arrested after a high speed chase that started in Clear Lake and ended in a rural portion of Cerro Gordo County this morning. Iowa State Patrol spokesman Mark Domino says Clear Lake police attempted to stop a vehicle that was reported stolen out of the Urbandale area. A pursuit took place, ending up with the vehicle being in the ditch at the intersections of County Roads B-43 and S-56 south of Portland. Domino says the two people taken into custody were wanted for outstanding warrants. Clear Lake police were assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department and Sheffield Police Department.

CHARLES CITY --- The Iowa State Patrol is also dealing with an overturned tanker truck on the Avenue of the Saints near Charles City this morning. The Iowa Department of Transportation says the southbound right lane of US Highway 218 was closed at the 225 mile marker due to that tanker truck incident. No other details have been released by the State Patrol, which is being assisted by Floyd County authorities at the scene.
